Traditional Republican Majority Wins “Meanest Ad”
Competition
The Kansas Traditional
Republican Majority, putatively keen on “inclusion, respect, reason and,
yes, compassion” stomped the competition this year with its impressively
misleading and mean spirited attack on state senate candidate Mary Pilcher
Cook
In its brief mission statement the
Kansas Traditional Republican Majority (KTRM) talks about “governing with
promise, not fear” and exploring “multiple perspectives without fear.” KTRM
also rejects the “hate and intolerance” that are alleged to “dominate the
Party.”
That the KTRM was able to rise
above these self-imposed handicaps and accuse Mary Pilcher Cook of wanting
to incarcerate parents for trying to save their children’s lives makes its
victory in the Meanest Ad competition all the more impressive.
Indeed, the only ad that was even
close was the one offered by Cook opponent, the KTRM supported Sue Gamble,
which accused Cook of wanting women to die of breast cancer.
Champions of “moderation”—no
argument here—recent KTRM alumni include Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson,
Democratic Rep. Cindy Neighbor, Democratic Rep. Lisa Benlon, and half the
“Republicans for Moore.”
Speaking of moderation, we are
reminded of William Lloyd Garrison’s tribute to the same:
"I will be as harsh as truth, and
as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or
speak, or write, with moderation. No! no! Tell a man whose house is on fire
to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the
hands of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from
the fire into which it has fallen--but urge me not to use moderation in a
cause like the present. I am in earnest--I will not equivocate--I will not
excuse—I will not retreat a single inch--AND I WILL BE HEARD."
The cause at hand was slavery. The
extremist followers of Garrison founded the Republican Party and the state
of Kansas. The fact that Kansas has emerged as the undisputed world capital
of late term abortion—precisely because of groups like KTRM—suggests the
need, even today, for a little immoderation.
And no, cloning opponent Cook was
not about to put anyone in jail. Shame, shame, shame!
