Public
Stoning in Somalia
On the twenty-sixth day
of October 2008, the scene was set for the public stoning of 13-year-old
Aisha Ibrahim Dhuhulow. An Islamic motorcade wound its way through the
Somalia port city of Kismayo announcing her execution the following day. A
sharia court had convicted her of sex outside of marriage, because she had
been raped by three armed men. She was accused of this offense when she
reported the rape. The three men who raped her were not arrested.
In
a Kismayo sports stadium on Monday the twenty-seventh of October, Aisha,
struggling, screaming and begging for mercy, was bound hand and foot and
buried to her neck. Then, before a jubilant crowd of about a thousand
spectators, fifty men pelted her with stones. At one point, she was dug up
to be checked for signs of life. Found to be alive, she was reburied, and
the stoning continued until her death. When a relative ran toward Aisha, an
Islamic militiaman fired a shot, which killed a boy who was standing by.
Press was allowed. The events were widely reported. This account is based
on those reports, readily available on Google. I have not repeated some
claims that I deem not to be credible. About two years ago, some American
academics rejoiced that Islamic fundamentalists had taken over much of
Somalia and set up sharia courts, because, it was said, they would bring
peace to the land. They certainly brought peace to Aisha.
